John
Tindal was
born between 1783 and 1790. He
lived in Sumter District, South Carolina,
where he was a planter. Sometime
prior to 1810, John married Martha (her
last name has not been recovered), who
was born sometime between 1783 and 1794.
According
to the 1810 Census of Sumter District,
South Carolina, John was between 16 and
26 years of age. There were two
females in the household: one was between
16 and 26 years of age and the other was
under ten.
On
March 9, 1811, for $300.00, John Tindal
sold 250 acres of land situated on Ox
Swamp, waters of the Black River, to
James A. Pearson of Sumter District (Deed
Book CC, Page 403, Sumter County Court
House). This was one half of a 500
acre tract granted to Lawrence Franklin
which was bounded on the south and east
by lands granted to David Shorter and on
the north by land owned by Michael Birch.
Martha signed her dower.
It
appears that Martha died sometime between
1826 and 1829. John died without a
will (Sumter County Court House,
Administration of John Tindal, Bundle 91,
package 5, February 9, 1829).
Samuel Tindal was appointed administrator.
John's property was appraised on February
16, 1829. The appraisers were
Joseph Pack, Michael Wilder, John P.
Richardson and L. T. Rhame. John's
personal property, which included 19
slaves, was appraised at $5,827.66.
John was survived by three children.
Peter
M. Butler was appointed guardian for the
two minor children: James S. Tindal and
John J. Tindal (Sumter County Court
House, Equity Court Roll No. 533,
September 25, 1834).
