Lt. James S. Tindall
Circa 1817 - 1862 

 

Lt. James S. Tindall, the son of Martha and John Tindal, was born in South Carolina about 1817.  Some time before November 25, 1836, James married Elizabeth Ann Harvin, the daughter of Charles Harvin.  Elizabeth was born in South Carolina on December 30, 1816.

On May 9, 1840, James S. Tindall sold Wrights Bluff property for $1,000.00 to J. E. Dunn and W. J. Magrath.  The witnesses were Richard S. Harvin and Jesse Hicks.  The renunciation of dower was signed by Eliza Ann Tindal on May 13, 1840 (Sumter County Register of Mesne Conveyances, Book KK, Page 169).

According to the 1840 Census of Sumter District, South Carolina, there were three males and one female in the home of James S. Tindall.  There was one male born between 1790 and 1800, one male born between 1810 and 1820, and one male born between 1820 and 1825.  There was one female born between 1820 and 1825.  There were also 19 slaves.  Some of the neighbors were: Charles R. Harvin, A. J. Tindall, and James H. Tindall.

On August 29, 1840, Samuel S. Tindall sold 323 acres on Big Branch in Clarendon County, South Carolina, to Samuel Harvin.  The property was bounded on the east by property of John J. Tindall, on the north by property of Robert Thames, on the west by property of Joseph W. Stukes, and on the south by property held in the estate of Joseph F. Richburg.  Witnesses were Henry Bradham, Jr. and William W. McDonald (Sumter County Register of Mesne Conveyances, Book KK, Page 250).

According to the 1850 Census of Sumter District, South Carolina, Samuel S. Tindall was a 35 year old planter.  The value of his real estate was $3,800.00.  Others in the household were Elizabeth E. Tindall (age 34), J. R. Harvin (age 30), and John W. Anderson (age 18).  J. R. Harvin owned real estate valued at $1,100.00.  John W. Anderson was a laborer.  All in the household were born in South Carolina.

According to the 1860 Census of Packsville in Clarendon District, South Carolina, James S. Tindall was a 42 year old farmer.  The value of his real estate was $10,000.00 and the value of his personal property was $50,000.00.  Also in the household was Eliza, age 42.

James died in the service of his country on February 23, 1862, and Elizabeth died on April 13, 1884.  James and Elizabeth were buried in the cemetery at Andrews Chapel Methodist Church in Clarendon County, South Carolina.
