The history of Jacobstown Baptist Church dates back to May 15, 1767. It was at that time that Richard Harrison bought 1/2 acre of ground for one ear of Indian corn. In 1768 the first meeting house was erected. October 19, 1786 marks the date when our church was formally organized. After a fire destroyed the original meeting house, the present church building was constructed in 1853. In 1960 the Education building was added. This building houses our Jacob's Town Children's Ministry, the Church Office, and the AWANA gymnasium.
Although many distinguished men have filled the pulpit, one stands out among the rest. Dr. David Jones, as the story goes, was preaching the day the Battle of Monmouth was fought. The booming of the cannons, 18 miles away, was distinctly heard by the congregation. At each explosion the preacher's spirit became more aroused, until, finally closing his Bible, said to have exclaimed. "Brethren, I feel more like fighting, than preaching. Let us be dismissed!" Dr. Jones went on to serve as chaplain to the men who were fighting for their country.
It is that spirit that has helped Jacobstown Baptist Church survive over 200 years. Men and women who are willing to stand up and do battle, not only for their country, but also for the cause of Christ.
