Eldee Young

was no stranger to the Singapore Jazz
scene. He performed numerous
times here with his own band, The
Eldee Young Quartet, as well as part of
Monteiro Young & Holt. He was the
original bassist of the Ramsey Lewis
Trio, which won a Grammy for "The In
Crowd" back in the 60's. He thrilled
audiences here in one of our local
hotels as well as many concert
appearances at festivals and other
shows. He was a founder member of
Young-Holt Unlimited. Back in the 60's,
the name Young-Holt Unlimited was a household name which appeared on the Billboard R&B charts for their hits, "Soulful Strut" and "Wack Wack". They even topped the Soul Brothers Chart with "Soulful Strut" in a chart that includes Stevie Wonder at number 4, Diana Ross & The Supremes at number 6 and James Brown at number 7.

He was a stalwart of the Chicago Jazz scene and is listed in the encyclopaedia of jazz by Leonard Feather. Together with Jeremy Monteiro in their group Monteiro Young & Holt, they performed in Finland, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Taiwan as well as the critically acclaimed performance in the 1988 Montreux Jazz Festival.

Eldee Young never failed to please audiences with his swinging bass style, a vocal style that was sensitive on the ballads and humorous on the swing tunes and the crowds enjoyed his ebullient and effervescent character, both on and off the stage.

Sadly, Eldee Young passed away in February 2007, and continues to be fondly remembered by his family and friends.
