Computer Hardware Options

Before you purchase a Computer System. there are several questions that need consideration.  Initially there is the following:

In our opinion there is no question:

"Clone" and "Intel"

"Clone" because computers have many components and we want to specify each and every one of them. This includes the size and "particularly" the manufacturer. With a name brand there is no choice. The same problem occurs with some of the packages offered by certain suppliers. The correct choice of the components gives you  quality components with the warranty from the manufacturer, as well as the computer system retailer. A 3 year warranty may not be much good from a Retailer, when the average life span of many Retailers is 2 years. The choice of a Clone also offers more assurance of reasonable repair costs

"Intel" because most of the Computer Systems in use are without a doubt Intel. Granted they are more expensive in most cases, however they are also more popular. One day you may want to sell your computer and purchase another. If you decide to sell in the after market, the chance of finding a buyer is much greater with an Intel, due to the  market penetration.

Our Recommendation changes with Industry advancement, but for "to-day" (July 2004), we suggest the following specific computer system:

Pentium Core 2 Duo with 2.67 CPU Processors.

Motherboard "Asus"

Hard drive 320 Gig

DVD Dual Layer Burner

RAM 2.0 Gigs

Video on board

Sound on board

Monitor 20" LCD

Speakers with Sub Woofer

Standard Keyboard with Optical Mouse

The above recommendation is based on the assumption that the purchaser wants a new computer system at a reasonable cost that is somewhat near the top end available today. This system should be useable for some time without upgrading or changing.

The Computer System as noted above should cost the purchaser approximately $725.00. If a Monitor is not required, this would reduce the cost by approximately $200.00. . All of these prices are tax included. Although we still recommend Intel as noted above, AMD has improved over the last few years and may be a viable option at about $100.00 less. If quotes are much higher than these noted, we strongly suggest you shop further or contact us at:  [email protected]

Before leaving this topic we should mention that used systems are also available and may be fine for many new users. The above new system is not state of the art to-day, but it is very close. It may be very appropriate to reduce the cost substantially on a first computer by starting with a used P III. If necessary, this can be sold later at minimal loss, as it will depreciate a lot less than a newer system. The cost for a used P III system is only about $75.00 excluding the Monitor. Used CRT 17" Monitors are available at about $15.00.
