Topic of Lesson: Traveling Seeds - Science
Grade: 1
Instructional Goals and Performance Objectives:
1. Students will sort and identify plant seeds that they have collected.
2. Students will identify varying methods of seed dispersal.
Materials/Aids:
1. A field or vacant lot where seeds can be found
2. Cups or containers for seeds
3. Blanket or large piece of cloth
Teaching Learning Activity:
1. Use a KWL on the overhead projector to brainstorm about what seeds
are and what they do. After students decide what they want to know about
seeds tell them that they are going to learn more about seeds by gathering and
sorting them.
2. Take the students outside to collect seeds in the field behind the school.
Students can collect their seeds in cups. They can also try dragging a blanket
across the ground and collect the seeds that stick to it.
3. Put the collected seeds into a class collection. Divide the class into
groups of three and give them an assortment of seeds from the class
collection. Ask the groups to examine the seeds and invent a system for
classifying or sorting them. Have each group share with the class what their
method for sorting their seeds is.
4. Lead a discussion about the structure and function of seeds. Ask the
groups to write out answers to these questions: 1. How does a seed's shape
and size affect dispersal? 2. What other parts of a plant help it to reproduce?
3. Why is it important for seeds to be dispersed in different ways? 4. Can
some seeds go farther than others? 5. What value might seed dispersal have
for plants, wildlife, wildlife, and humans?
5. After the groups have answered the questions have them come up with
things that they have learned and write them on the overhead projector to
complete the KWL.
Evaluation Strategy:
Informally check for understanding by walking from group to group and
asking them why they answered the questions the way they did, or why
they sorted their seeds the way that they did.
Have the groups turn in their written answers to the five questions and
check their answers.
