Philosophy of Education
My philosophy of education stems from my lifelong love of learning and my desire to pass on the inherent rewards and joys of learning to children. I believe that a teacher's role is to guide students through the discovery process, supporting them as they develop and take risks, showing them how to learn, and inspiring them to enjoy learning. For me, the greatest rewards of teaching lie in watching a child grasp a new concept, or achieve a goal, and in helping children realize that they can do anything they set their minds to.
It is my belief that success in the classroom must mean success for all students, regardless of ability or special needs. Each child is a unique individual, with diverse strengths, interests, ways of learning, and needs that must be met. My strong commitment to the principles of inclusive education, and experience working with students with diverse academic, social, and physical needs, have enabled me to develop my capacity to help all students reach their potential. Through effective classroom, lesson, and assessment adaptations, positive expectations of all students, as well as the use of a variety of teaching methods, I ensure that each child experiences the rewards of learning and feels proud of his or her unique successes.
My approach to teaching is largely based on hands-on and discovery learning, as I believe students can learn much from authentic situations and from actively doing or questioning, rather than passively absorbing information. I strive to create a safe, respectful, and stimulating learning environment, in which children feel ownership of their learning and are not afraid to take risks. Through the use of scaffolding, building on each child's prior knowledge and experiences, encouraging experimentation, and challenging my students to answer their own questions, I aspire to develop active, confident, self-motivated young learners. As a resourceful and enthusiastic educator, I also incorporate numerous other techniques into my teaching practice, such as cooperative learning, visual and tactile teaching methods, integrating technology into the classroom, interactive activities, and peer teaching.
Having positive expectations of all my students allows me to maintain excellent classroom management, as all my students know what is expected of them and how to succeed. My classroom is an organized, structured, and predictable environment in which students can feel safe, yet it is also a flexible place in which there is room for teachable moments. Consistent and fair discipline, rules, routines, and consequences help my students to learn problem-solving skills, responsibility, and self-discipline.
I chose to enter the teaching profession because it offers the opportunity to make a difference in many lives, the way other teachers have made a difference in mine. A teacher can have a profound impact on the lives of our children, instilling in them the confidence and determination to pursue their dreams and to never give up. My goal as a teacher is to be a mentor, a caring and understanding role model, and an agent of change who helps shape the future by touching children's lives and helping them to believe in themselves.
