Thematic Unit Outline

Description of Unit: This unit was written for first grade classes and is planned to take one
week of school days to be completed. The topic is plants and their life cycle. The purpose of
this unit is to integrate the different disciplines. To teach this unit science, math, language arts,
art, and technology will be used.

Objectives:
1.Students will be able to list what a plant needs to live.(E.g. soil, water, air, and space.)
2.Students will be able to write about and illustrate each stage of the plant's life cycle.
3.Students will be able to spell and use plant vocabulary correctly in sentences.
4.Students will be able to create a book about plants with the information and observations
that they have gathered about plants.

Daily Outline

Day 1: Introduce the topic of the week, plants. Use a KWL to find out what students
already know and want to learn about plants. Read a non-fiction book about plants to the
class and discuss what new information the students learned about plants. Have the students
plant seeds. At writing time have the students write about what it would be like to be planted.
Use words that have to do with plants for vocabulary and spelling words. Take the class
outside for a walk to look at the plants that live around their school grounds.

Day 2: Have students take a seed walk in a field near by the school. After they collect seeds
from the field, have the student's sort and classify their seeds. Use the data that they get from
the seeds to make a class chart or bar graph. Review vocabulary and spelling words and then
play plant bingo. Students should also write in their journals about the new things they have
learned about plants and add to the KWL chart.

Day 3: Have the students check their seeds for any signs of growth and record data in their
journals. Discuss what a plant needs to live. Add that information to the KWL chart.
Continue to review plant vocabulary and play plant jeopardy. Have the class do a plant art
project with leaves. Take the class outside to measure trees. Talk about the different uses of
trees and why it might be necessary to measure them. Chart the data from each group on a
computer spreadsheet and then turn it into a bar graph. Project the graph or chart onto the
television or over head for the class to view and understand the importance of graphing
information.

Day 4: Continue vocabulary games and reading books about plants. Have the students
check their seeds for growth and journal what they find. Do a plant art project with tissue
paper and pipe cleaners, to make flowers. Add more information to the KWL chart and have
the students watch a video about plants. Take the class outside and have each student find a
plant and draw it in their science journals.

Day 5: On the final day of the unit have students finish their plant journals and record their
observations from the seeds that they have planted. Have the students make life cycle books
for plants. Laminate the books and bind them for each student. Allow the students time to
share their books with each other. Give the spelling and vocabulary test on plants and
complete the KWL chart.

Evaluation: Evidence of learning will be assessed from journal writing, the individual books
that students create, and from questioning that will be asked during discussion and KWL time.
Students will also take a unit test and spelling and vocabulary quiz.
