Kit Components

The major components of interest in the Elsbett kit are the glow plugs, the injector nozzles, the coolant heat exchanger, the electric fuel filter heater and the second fuel filter.
The glow plugs are modified so they sit a few millimeters more into the pre chamber.   I'm not sure how the nozzles are modified.

When the kit comes it has lots of bages divided up by categories.  Those catagories are electrical, fuel and coolant.   The rest of the parts from the kit can all be seen at the bottom of  the
Extra Parts and Tools Page.

How it Works

The system works by heating the veggie oil in the main fuel filter with the electric heater until the coolant going to the heat exchanger is up to  around 65 C  (149 F).  At that point the temperature switch in the coolant line tells the relay to shut off the electric heater.  The coolant heat exchanger is all that is needed at this point.  Your engine runs around 80 C (176 F) which means that is the temperature of the coolant heating your veggie oil.  Here is the diagram for the
original fuel and coolant path.  Here is another diagram after the Elsbett conversion.

Cost

Total for the Elsbett kit is $1600 (this includes the $400 extra for the full injectors instead of just the nozzles) and an additional $300 in parts and tools.  It could be less if you have some of the tools or can borrow them.  Remember it will cost you to get the nozzles installed and balanced by a Bosch shop if you dont get them that way from Elsbett.  I will probably be between $200-300 to have them installed and balanced.  You will also have to pay for a filtration system if you dont already have one.  There are lots of ways to filter your grease so do some research to see what is best for you.
Here is a page that will link you to the sysetems I have used. I also got a $24 bill from UPS for customs charges.

How long will it take?

If you have all the components, you have reviewed the components of the kit and the car, you have received the procedure and you have block of uninterrupted time set aside the conversion will take 25-35 hours depending on what you run into as far as previous problems or cleaning.  We spent 2-3 hour cleaning out around the injectors on one car because mouse had stored sticky nuts down in there.  The were impossible to get out.

Veggie Oil Recommendations

Elsbett recommends only using new Canola.  They provide a specification for a European fuel grade canola.  While this would be great to do its not possible for most.  I use used canola, peanut and soy.  I prefer to stay with canola because its cloud point after use in a fryer seems to be lower.  I would not put any cloudy material in the car.  In temperature below freezing it would be wise to add 10% diesel fuel.  More as it gets colder.  I typically run 10% diesel all year.

It's very important to make sure you have a good source of vegetable oil.  Preferably before you buy the kit.

I filter all of my veggie oil to 1 micron through double a filter bag.  It's a 5 micron 1 micron combination from McMaster Carr.  Here is the information on my
Filtration Systems

I also use a little Power Service Diesel Additive (the white bottle)

Buying Recommendations for Elsbett Online Purchasing

For my 1998 Mercedes 300 Turbo Diesel I purchased the following kit.  It will also work for a 1999.

Mercedes Benz E300D Turbo 210 / 1997-00 / 606961 / 6 cyl. / 2996 ccm / 130 kw / 176,8 PS / BHP / 4400min-1 / Bosch / IP / 1 tank.

Make sure you pick the credit card option when entering your order.  If you get all the way through and you didnt enter a credit card you messed up (like me).

If you want to reduce the time your car is out of commission you should order a full set of balanced injectors and not just the nozzles that the kit comes with.

In order to do this I included the following statement in the shipping instructions.

Please send entire injectors with nozzles installed and balanced for the extra price.

What I received and paid for was a full set of injectors and an extra set of nozzles.  I guess they sell the kit as one item (which includes the nozzles) and the fully assembled injectors as the other.  Ive heard others have been able to order without the second set of nozzles and pay less but I couldnt figure out how.  All total the kit cost me $1600 from Elsbett.

You can find the right kit by clicking
Conversion Kits then Cars and Vans then Mercedes Benz then E-Klasse(W210)
and on the second page is this.......
Mercedes Benz E300D Turbo 210 / 1997-00 / 606961 / 6 cyl. / 2996 ccm / 130 kw / 176,8 PS / BHP / 4400min-1 / Bosch / IP / 1 tank.

They are pretty fast at shipping the kit.  You should have your kit in about 10 days so order the other parts you need right away and or get started taking the car apart.  Theres lots you can do before the kit arrives.
