Dungeon Bowl Preview

By SkiJunkie

Tuesday, February 08, 2005

****ATTENTION: The Dungeon Bowl application has just been made available as a preview. There are many problems that still need to be fixed so you probably won't be able to play a full game successfully but you can see how it looks and how the random map creation works. See the bottom of the page for the download.

This new update was done three months ago around Christmas. Basically I just updated it to the state the Blood Bowl game was in. There is still no network option available and I did no Dungeon Bowl specific coding. As a matter of fact I have not even had time to really test it and see if it is working at least as good as the last preview. But people have been asking for it so I am putting it up.

****ATTENTION: The Dungeon Bowl application has just been made available as a preview. You've seen my Blood Bowl Java App. Hopefully you've downloaded it and enjoyed it. Here is a sneak preview of the Dungeon Bowl Java App I am working on. Completion depends on my time, and how much use I see the Blood Bowl App getting.

Map Layout Selection Screen

Here are the 8 map layouts that will be available in the game. You will notice that each map is made up of 6 regular tiles and 2 end identical end zone tiles. All tiles are 8 by 12 squares. On each new game the 6 non-end zone tiles are randomly rotated, flipped, mirrored, and placed in one of the 6 possible positions. The end zone tiles are always in the orientation shown in the above mini maps. Additionally, on each of the 6 tiles one teleporter and one chest are randomly placed in a non-wall square of the tile. So in all there will be 6 chests and 6 teleporters randomly placed about the map with 1 of the 6 chests containing the ball.

Main Game Screen

Here is the main game screen for the Dungeon Bowl Java Client. You will use this screen to play the game. You will notice that other than the pitch not much has changed on the screen. This map happens to be map type 1. You will also notice the scroll bars on the right and bottom of the pitch. Since the dungeon is too large to be contained within the window I made it scrollable.

Close-up of Field During Play

This is a close-up of the field during play. Here you can see that the player images have been changed so they will show up against the busy dungeon background. The black and blue swirls are teleporters. Also shown in the picture are the brown chests and an orange and red explosion where one chest not containing the ball has been opened.

Another point of interest is that all the information for each dungeon tile is stored in a (.dat) text file that can be edited to create your own 8x12 map tiles. Even the end zone tile can be edited, and since there is only one, it is guaranteed to be the same for both teams. This means practically unlimited possibilities for unique random dungeons.

Don't get to overly excited about this app. It still has a ways to go for completion and I've been busy with work lately.
