Pedometer Project

Purpose:  The purpose of this assignment is for you to use a pedometer to discover and compare the difference movement makes in your daily activities.

Equipment Available/Needed:  You will need one or two pedometers to use during this assignment.  (You may check one out from school or purchase one through this link or at a local sporting goods store.)  You will also need a calculator, materials for your poster size chart, a computer to write your final report.

Assignment:

· Print out and complete the Pedometer Project Record Sheet.
· Wear one pedometer on a school day and again on a non-school day.  The 2nd pedometer can be worn by another family member on a weekday and on a weekend day.  (Including the 2nd pedometer is optional.)
· Take your heart rate at the beginning of the day for 10 seconds (just after waking up), after any strenuous activity and during quiet time.  If a 2nd person is participating in this study have them do this also.  Record this information on the Pedometer Project Record Sheet.
· Devise a chart or graph to record your step count throughout the day as well as your heartrate.  It should be at least 8”x11” in size so it can be easy to read.
· Write a one-page report comparing the two days, especially describing how you felt at different times during the day.  Your report should compare your activity levels of the two days and compare how active you were during the two days.

Questions:   If you have questions, at any time, during this assignment please feel free to contact Mrs. Starks at [email protected].

How much distance did you cover each day?  _____________________________________

To figure this, measure your average step.  Do this by walking at regular speed through snow, or with wet shoes on concrete or in sand.  Measure the distance covered from the heel of one foot to the heel of the other foot.  Fill the distances into the formula below to figure the mileage covered each day.  Show your work on another sheet or on the back of this page.

Average Step Distance (in feet) x Steps taken each day = Distance covered (in feet)
(Divide the distance covered in feet by 5,280 to determine the miles covered)
