What is Pyrography?

"Writing with fire"!

Pyrography is an extremely specialized art technique in which the artist burns a design or picture into wood, paper, gourds, leather, tagua (vegetable ivory) or other natural materials using a heated tool, such as a hot poker, flame,
or even solar energy.

Also referred to as "woodburning" or "pokerwork", the art of burning pictures into wood dates back to the ancient
times of cave drawing.  Due to limitations imposed by subquality materials and tools, most early works resulted in
rather rough, crude pieces - still amazing, in and of themselves - but not what would be considered a truly fine art
form by today's standards...

Modern technology has advanced; adept pyrographers now have the tools necessary to take their artistic abilities to entirely new levels.  In the hands of skilled pyrography experts, the very essence, or spirit, of their subjects can
be captured in
incredibly detailed portraits and scenes.

The more expensive, temperature-regulated woodburning irons typically reach upwards of 2000.  Though the temperature may be adjusted, these units require a great deal of experience and skill to master.  Depending upon
the manufacturer, some less expensive units range between 450 & 750.  For those seeking detailed information regarding pyrography equipment, we have added a short list of better-quality pyrography units currently available
to the modern "fire-writer" on our Pyrography Tools page.  Information on the variable heat unit
this artist uses
may also be found there.

Regardless of the pyrography tool used, the picture is created using only varied degrees of burn; shades and
shadows are all regulated by the length of time the heat is allowed to be in contact with the wood.  Dark areas
are deep, heavy, layered burns, whereas the light areas are made with just the briefest touch of the iron.

The detail and precision with which each piece is created requires Pyrography to be classified as some of the
finest artwork available to discerning collectors - perfect for display in lovely, upper class homes or prominent
offices; yet equally charming in a rustic, log cabin get-a-way...
