| Pyrography by Jaque McHenry Pyrography Tools A little about Pyrography Tools or Woodburning Tools... INEXPENSIVE SINGLE UNIT BURNERS: typically can be purchased online or at chain stores for under $25. PROS: *These units are very inexpensive. *They remain at a fairly low temperature, usually 450 - 750; easy for the novice to practice with. *Nearly all can be equipped with a nice variety of inexpensive, removable tips, allowing for a great deal of variety. *They are attached to a cord which plugs into a regular wall outlet, so easy set up. CONS: *The heating element is inside the body of the tool, so the handgrip can become painfully hot. *They are usually one set temperature. *They often do not last very long. MID-RANGE SINGLE UNIT BURNERS: typically can be purchased online or at chain stores for under $40.00. A good example of a mid-range tool: Walnut Hollow's "Creative Versa-Tool" PROS: *These are still quite inexpensive - yet, as the name implies, very versatile. *Temperature is a little higher, allowing for quicker, deeper burns. *The unit remains a constant 950. *Can now purchase, separately, a plug in heat controller, allowing the heat to be "turned down".. *The Versa-Tool comes with a wide variety of tips; can be used for far more than just Pyrography. *Comes with a nice, hard plastic carry-case, for ease of storage. CONS: *The standard unit still only allows for a single heat setting. *The heating element still runs along the body of the pen, so grip still gets quite hot - even with the rubber slip-cover. TOP OF THE LINE WOODBURNING TOOLS: There are several "major" brands that one could consider "top of the line". Burnmaster & Razortip are the two that really spring to mind. These types of units range from bare-bones $115.00 (no tips) to $700+ with accessories. PROS: *Quite simply, "You get what you pay for"! Expensive, but well worth the added features and comfort! *Temperature can be easily controlled - room temperature to 2000 within 10 seconds. Some units offer "Dual port", so can be working with two pens simultaneously. Offer an extremely wide variety of fixed tip or removable tips. Can purchase a nice carrying case, set up for these particular units. CONS: VERY expensive for the novice to even consider. Rather large, bulky box units - the "pens" with attached cords plug into the box, which plugs into the wall outlet. Compared to the inexpensive fixed burners, these require quite a bit of extra room. The tip styles, which are many, are also VERY expensive. ($24 each, compared to $2 - $3!) WHAT DOES THIS ARTIST PREFER? As mentioned on our Home page, Jaque uses two different Pyrography Units, depending upon the project: *An older, "faithful" standby - Walnut Hollow's Creative Versa-Tool* AND *A dual port BURNMASTER Eagle Wood Burner, by MASTERCARVER [HOME] [ARTIST BIOGRAPHY] [PYROGRAPHY GALLERIES] [CUSTOM ORDERS] [AVAILABLE PYROGRAPHY] [LINKS] [PYROGRAPHY TOOLS] [CONTACT] |
