Chinese Weddings - Traditions & The Symbolism of Red
Today, many Chinese Americans infuse both the beauty of their traditional culture with modern Western traditions. In Chinese culture, the color red has a deep and powerful meaning and is used throughout celebrations including weddings. Red is the symbol of happiness and ultimate joy, thus all Chinese weddings include the color red. Traditionally Chinese wedding invitations and reception menus are a stunning red graced with black or gold calligraphy. The guest book is always red and traditionally made of silk with embroidered edges. Guests sign their witness to this cloth with a black pen and the cloth is folded and stored as a special memento of the wedding day.

Double Happiness - Shuang Xi
The Chinese character for happiness, hsi or xi, which is pronounced "she", is an important part of Chinese weddings and is usually displayed somewhere at the wedding reception or banquet. The Chinese character combines two individual characters to represent double happiness. Double happiness or Shuang xi signifies good fortune for the newlyweds and ensures a happy future.

Dragons and the Phoenix
Dragon and Phoenix designs are also popular for wedding decorations as it symbolizes male and female harmony and a balanced relationship. The motif is rooted in mythology where the dragon symbolizes the Emperor and at his side stands the magically powerful phoenix with her life-giving song.

Chinese Weddings - Tea Ceremony
Drinking tea is an integral part of Chinese weddings much like the Western tradition of toasting champagne. In Chinese weddings, the new couple performs a tea ceremony to pay respect to their families. The couple serves tea to their parents and grandparents from a traditional tea pot. Serving the brides parents (mother first) followed by her grandparents. The tea is then served in the same way to the groom's family. The type of tea served is at the discretion of personal taste, though black dragon, orange blossom, and classic green tea are the preferred choices.

Chinese Wedding Dress and Gowns & Grooms Attire
Traditional chinese wedding dress attire includes beautiful brocade Qi Pau (Chinese jacket) and Cheongsam. Cheongsams gowns are easily recognized for they are a very slim fitting chinese dress that have two side slits for walking. For men, the style is called a Da Gua, featuring a front-closing tunic.

Flower Decorations and Wedding Bouquets
In contrast to the Western wedding, white flowers are the symbol of death and used only for funerals. A few traditional Chinese flowers for weddings include the peony, orchid, lotus and daffodil. The peony and daffodil are a symbol of spring and renewed life while the orchid is an exotic and fragrant flower that symbolizes love and fertility. In the Buddhist religion, the lotus represents four virtues; scent, purity, softness and loveliness.

Firecrackers, Chinese Wedding Tradition
Chinese celebrations always include firecrackers to scare away evil spirits. This traditional ritual is performed not only at major celebrations but also weddings. Before the couple crosses the threshold during the recessional, long chains of firecrackers suspended on a stick are lit for several minutes.

Chinese Wedding Favors
Chinese wedding favors include everything from chopsticks wedding favors, lucky coins to sandalwood fans.
