NO General Meeting on Wed., June 21, 2006
Next JAO event is LA Dodgers Japanese American Community Night on Thursday, June 22nd
In lieu of the regular Wednesday meeting, we will join the Blue Crew as the Dodgers host their annual JA Community Night. The Dodgers face Ichiro Suzuki and the Seattle Mariners what could be an old fashion "barn burner". As of this writing, there are still a few of the field level ticket available. Email John "J.T." Tamaki at [email protected] or Kenji Ogawa at [email protected] for tickets.
Sheriff's Round-Up
Byron Shinyama, our speaker from the Olympic Academy said many of the kids they see are a direct result from the family life they have. Upon interviewing the parents, a pattern of inattention is seen. A hot topic of conversation is the "over scheduling" of our lives and the lives of our kids. I only know from my experience as a kid growing up, maybe we need to back to giving you kids and ourselves for that matter, some time to be a kid, vegetate or just relax each day. We have become so busy trying to maximize our day, we have lost the importance of time to interact, time to pay attention to others around us and to ourselves. I am no expert, but when we lose touch with our loved ones and ourselves, that is when we are truly lost. So "Make your friends feel there is something on them" and have an Optimistic day.

JAO President
Last Meeting...
The Olympic Academy
Last meeting, we were honored to have Byron Shinyama, the Director of the Olympic Academy as our speaker. The Olympic Academy is part of the Asian American Drug Abuse Program (AADAP). It is a residential treatment for teenaged substance abusers. The program lasts 12 to 18 months and the teens have daily chores, schooling and counseling. The program is designed to first make the teens aware of the causes of their abuse. Next they learn to deal with these causes. Finally, they learn how to re-enter their home life and to deal with their future. The Program has 16 beds and has been in existence for approximately four years. Because there are no bars at the facility, teens have left the program on their own. They are reported as missing to their parents and the authorities. To date, all of their graduates have gone on to enter college, a very impressive statistic.
