WHY TEST?
Tests are YARDSTICKS.  Schools use them to measure and then improve education.  Tests tell schools that they need to strengthen courses or change teaching techniques.  Other tests compare students by schools, school districts or cities.  All tests determine the student's level of achievement in specific learning tasks or academic subjects.
The goal of testing is to asses what a child knows...how he/she learns, and to determine what teaching strategies will help the child learn most effectively.
Tests give teachers only part of the picture of your child's strengths and weaknesses.  Teachers combine the results of many methods of assessment to gain insights into the skills, abilities and knowledge of your child.
It is important to do well on tests.  Not only do tests measure a basic skill, it can affect a year's grade, or a child's placement in school.  The ability to do well on tests can help throughout life in such things as getting a driver's license or getting a job.  Parents can help develop this valuable, life-long skill.

What Should You Ask the Teacher?
Before the test:
>
Which tests will be administered and for what purposes?
> How will the test results be used?
> What other means of assessment will be used to measure my child's
     performance?
> Should my child practice taking tests?
After the test:
>
What do the test results mean about my child's skills and abilities?
> Are the test results consistent with my child's classroom performance?
> Are any changes anticipated in my child's educational program?
Are there any things we can do at home to help our child strengthen
     particular skills?
