At about 15 years ago my husband wanted an aviary in the garden. I did not like the idea because we had a very big garden with a pond, grass and nice plants in it, but the aviary came !
We started with a small cage with canaries, and than the building started, the aviary is now as big as half the garden.
We did have fruit -and insect eating birds in it and the only ones left are the mynahs, chines appelfinches and the songtrushes, they are the eldest birds here
We have 2 couples of redrumped parakeets, and although warned by many breeders that they may be agressive towards other birds in mating season, they both had chicks this year.
There are two bourks parakeets , probably two males, they are very quiet and only active at dawn. I love their beautiful pink colours, and we have 2 mexican sparrows, they are the seize of a canary and the male had a red chest. The songtrushes I have got 3 or more nests in one year, and especialle the female is beautiful , she has got the cinamon colour !
UPDATE :
In about july 2006 something very tragadic happend, af first I lost some chicken of the red rumped parakeet and the songtrush, and later a few cockatiels and kakarikis. First I really thought that someone was stealing my birds, but we found droppings in the aviary 3 times bigger than those of my guinea pigs. So I knew some animal was stealing our birds, and this without leaving feathers or making any noise. When we broke our avirary ... a rat escaped, and now I have a new aviray which is rat- and mice free Update pictures will come soon
