To the Visitor
This site is here for passersby, for family, and friend,
For those obsessed as I am in searching for lost kin.
Rather odd so some might say, this digging up the dead,
Seeking little tidbits that some cousin may have said.
My task was once a happy one, but now is sad to tell;
I went looking for a great grandpa, and found ancestry Hell.
Census, taxes, spelling fauxs, undocumented lives,
Nephews married to their aunts, brothers sharing wives.
Murder, mayhem, war, and flood on records took their toll,
Certificates of family life made kindling in the cold.
And of course the thoughtlessness of all those pioneers,
Who left their stories in the dust written with their tears.
I'm on mail lists out of Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee,
Arkansas and Texas, Louisiana, Kintuckee.
Paper bits now fill my desk, my bed, my couch, my floor,
E-mail copies piled so high, we can't get out the door.
In an attempt to ease the way for those who follow me,
I've named one child Family Group Sheet, and the other, Pedigree.
As for this rhyme, I've no excuse, genetically, I'm doomed,
Bennetts, Boones, and Freemans learn bad poetry in the womb.
