Although our stay in New Mexico wasn't a long one, it was certainly memorable.  After leaving Texas, we headed staright for a town called Silver City which borders Gila National Forest.  Silver City has been described as one of the top ten small towns in the US.  We still don't know why.  Its biggest claim to fame was that Billy the Kid once lived there.  Unfortunately the house which Billy the Kid used to live in is no longer there.  A big disappointment, as is the Main Street which is supposed to be an Artist's paradise.  The Galleries have nothing much to offer in terms of good, quality works of art.

The local museum is fantastic though.  Well worth a visit especially as it explains the local history in interesting detail.  Amazingly, some parts of the town did not receive running water until the 1970s.  Unbelievable, especially for a Super Power.

After our brief stop in Silver City we decided to head for Gila National Forest and Bill Evans Lake where we had been told by a Forest Ranger we would be able to camp for free.
