Mississippi
Vicksberg is famous for a long and bloody battle which took place there towards the end of the Civil War.  The town was very important strategically to the Confederate Army.
ka-boom!
As long as they held Vicksberg they had control of the Mississippi River.  The Union Army, if they were to win the war, needed to gain control of the river.  With this as their objective, the Union Army, under General Grant, first attacked and then laid seige to the Confederate encampment.  Eventually, after many men from both sides had died, the Union Army captured Vicksberg and with it the Mississippi River.  This defeat was a major blow to the Confederacy, one that they never recovered from.

Fittingly, the area where this battle took place is now a National Monument.  You can still see the Confederate and Union battle lines and dotted throughout the park, are monuments to the Battalions which fought there.  Unfortunately the museum was closed for refurbishment when we visited, but, you can still get a sense of the struggle which took place, from driving round.  Vicksberg is well worth a visit even if you are not interested in military history.
