The American Civil War
Apart from the Revolution, the Civil War, was probably the single most important event which helped to define the U.S. as the country we know today.  The war helped unite a country where the North and South were so different, politically, culturally and economically.  This war took place over 140 years ago so you would have thought that the Southerners (the losers) would have had long enough to get over their loss and move on.  Yet, in many Southern towns the Confederate flag is still prominantly displayed and you feel as though they are still fighting the war.  Conversations we have had with Northerners back this up.  The 'Yankees' feel as though Southerners haven't forgiven the North for winning the war and imposing Reconstruction on them (for example, abolishing slavery and destroying their way of life).
Mississippi
From Vicksberg, it was a short journey to the southern part of the Natchez Trace Parkway, an old road which stretches from Mississippi to Tennessee.  It is designated a scenic byway and has stops along the way which are important archaeologically and culturally.  We stopped off at Rocky Springs, a farming town which was abandoned soon after the end of the Civil War.  All that is left of the settlement is the Church and a rusty old safe.  After a night of camping in the free RV park, we set off for Louisiana.
Ooooh look, an empty rusty safe
