We were only stopping for lunch at St Francisville and were at the ferry terminal to the Mississippi River before we found a place big enough to stop. Nowhere to park here but, luckily, there was an area before the ferry just big enough to turn round in. It was at this point that smoke started to rise from the steering column and we lost all the power steering fluid. We were going nowhere.
After about 3 hours our tow truck arrived but he had been wrongly informed by our Insurance Company that we were a car and he didn't have the means to tow us. It was then an overnight wait for the one that could. The Elvis look-alike tow truck man took us on a 10 minute ride to Cecil Graves Chevrolet Garage in town (though his records show that he took us to Baton Rouge 50 miles away).
Cecil Graves diagnosed an ill fitted pressure hose (thanks to garage# 1 in Okeechobee, HiTec Automotive?) which had split. They said that it would be after the weekend when the new part could be delivered and they reluctantly let us stay with the van on their carpark. We turned up with less than a quarter of a tank of gas, therefore no generator. We were also low on fresh water. The weather was warm and you can imagine the rest.
