Stayed at KOA and they do dog sitting (their only redeeming feature - Jane).  So off we went into the French Quarter where, we were reliably informed, it's at!  My (Liz) mum said 'whatever you do in America go to Baker Street', she meant Bourbon Street so that's where we went - and stayed.
It took us all afternoon and night to move 100 yards up the street.  Started at an absinthe bar then on to a jazz pub where 'Louis' younger cousin' played "When the Saints" and "It's a Wonderful World" and ended up in a gay bar called The Bourbon Street Pub, or something like that (which reminded us of an up-market Bacchus). We met Ramone here, a big fan of 'The League of Gentlemen'. His English accent was right out of Royston Vasey, he showed us some very clever card tricks and very kindly went home to bring us back a smoke.  The Hurricane is a must have cocktail and varies much in price.  One of ours was $10 but we got the jazz too.
It rained heavily whilst we were there but the verandahs kept us dry along the streets and you are not walking  for long between bars.  The atmosphere was definitely a party one despite Mardi Gras finishing 2 weeks earlier.  We could have stayed a week at least but had to remind ourselves that parties would be an added bonus on this trip as we had the dogs and the West to get to.
A very bumpy ride along I-10 out of Louisiana and into Texas followed.
Louisiana
Doggy Tip!

A levee runs about 7 miles by the Mississippi river which is paved and ideal for dog walks. This is just across the main road from the K.O.A. New Orleans West, Jefferson Highway. We saw a coyote trotting by the banks of the river here.
What a wonderful world!
