GrayC's Story

"GrayC"

We took GrayC in on Dec 1, 1996. We had seen him outside for a little while. He started hanging around when Sweet Baby and his Mama were out there. We thought HE was a SHE though. But he'd never let us get near enough to him to check. Every day, sometimes a few times a day, we'd feed him. We thought he might have a home but we weren't sure. As the weather got colder GrayC started hanging around more. On Dec 1, he insisted that we let him in the house. He came up to our kitchen window by standing on the top of a 6 foot stockade fence, and banged himself against our window! Well, that did it. Jeff opened up the patio and called him inside. GrayC came running. It was still cold in there, so Jeff got the kerosene heater and started it up. Poor GrayC was scared....but he was now safe and warm.

"GrayC or was it Gracie??"

It was a Sat evening and all the vets were closed, so we had to wait until Monday morning to take him to the vet. We dared not even take him in the house until we had him tested for Feline Aids (FIV) and Feline Leukemia (Felv) first.

Jeff brought him to the vet near where he worked first thing Monday morning. They examined GrayC and did the tests. It turned out that he had fleas, so we left him there to be bathed. Thankfully he tested negative for both diseases! So, we took GrayC into our little bedroom that night. I don't even remember how long he stayed in there, but it was only a few days, maybe a week. He hid a lot under the bed, so we gradually blocked it off so he couldn't get under there anymore. He warmed up to us right away after that. Within a few days we introduced him to our other cats. He fit right in. He was one of our easiest transitions!

We had had GrayC and been calling him "Gracie" for about 3 months, when I saw him roll over on his back. I said...gee,,,she looks like she might be a HE! Jeff went to check...and turned a bright shade of RED! SHE was a HE!! We immediately changed the spelling of his name. We were really surprised by that revelation. He did look like a boy to me. He has a very high meow though, and I swear he Coos like a pigeon. He's such a good cat. We all love him and are so glad he's a part of our lives!

We sadly and suddenly lost our beloved GrayC on December 2, 2005.
