Sehwan Sharif


It is situated on an eminence on the verge of a swamp on the right bank of the canal, which flows from the Mancher Lake into the Indus. It is one of the oldest towns of Sindh. It was the capital of one of the five provinces of the Hindu Kingdom of Sindh in the 7th century.

Even during the Muslim rule Sehwan or Siwistan as it was called remained a seat of a governor for a considerable period.

Sehwan is best known for the shrine of Hazrat Lal Shahbaz Qalandar. The saint came from Marvind in Persia. He belonged to Qalandariyah order of dervishes and is reputed to be a Sufi, a missionary, a scholar, a poet and the writer of several books in Persian and Arabic . Annual Urs or festival begins on the 18th Shaaban Devotees come from all over the country Huge drums and gongs beat to the mass devotional dances of the saint's followers.

The Qalander dervishes differ from the Sufis in that they are less for social and moral restrictions and while their sincerity is unquestionable they tend to lead a more extrovert existence. A basic tenet of the order is to seek knowledge through wandering. Like mystic gypsies. They are found in all the holy towns in Pakistan where they depend on alms. His title "Shahbaz." (Royal falcon) was given to him by his "high flight into the paths of spiritual domain.

His works on grammar, philology and poetry are read throughout Pakistan. The love of dancing by the Qalandarlya sect of dervishes is expressed in their poetry. His mausoleum was constructed in 1356 by the order of the emperor Feroz Shah Tughlak.

Sehwan is also an ancient town probably the oldest of continuous existence in Sindh Nearby' lie the ruins of the huge fort founded by Alexander the Great. It was also the capital of the Buddhist ruler who was a brother to Chandragupta II in the 4th century AD

The town is also famous for the manufacture of c1lazed pottery.
