Sanghar Bahmanabad

It is 15 miles South East of Shahdadpur. It was originally called Bahmanabad and was according to tradition founded by the Iranian Prince Bahman of the Sassanian dynasty. At that time Bahmanabad was on the bank of the Indus. The river has now shifted to 30 miles towards the west. Cunningham has identified Brahmanabad with Harmateila of Greek historians where Ptolemy was wounded. It was the capital of one of the four provinces into which Sindh was divided during the rule of the Rais dynasty. Raja Dahir made it the capital of Sindh in 680 AD. After the conquest by the Arabs, Brahmanabad was supplanted by Mansurah. Here was an important fort. It is said that the fort had 1400 bastions and its vestiges remained upto 1600 AD. The ruins of the old city extended over several miles. The mound on which the ruins of the old fort are spread is 35 ft. high and about 4 miles in circumference. The town was presumably destroyed in an earthquake at the same time as Bambhore and Alor.
