Remittance

In the early 1980s about three million Pakistanis worked in the Gulf States, sending home some 2,000 million US dollars annually in remittances. This income was essential to the poorer Pakistani families, most of whom had at least one member working overseas. The drop in oil prices in the mid eighties drastically reduced this income, but since the 1991 Gulf War.when the Pakistanis sent soldiers to protect the holy land of Saudi Arabia, Pakistanis have been given more of the available jobs.

Now nearly 1.5 million workers send home about 1,500 million dollars annually. According to the latest figures the average annual income per person in Pakistan is under US $400, but adjusted to real purchasing power in Pakistan, where the cost of living is low, and taking into account that many people grow their own food, the figure jumps to US $1,900 a year, about US $300 higher than that in India.Pakistan's tourism industry remains largely undeveloped, in spite of the great potential it holds.
