The Moghul Empire


By the early 16th century, the Moghuls, with an army of elephants and matchlocks, had established control over northern India and what is now Pakistan. The first Moghul emperor was Babur (1483-1530), whose military genius initiated some 200 years of Moghul rule. He possessed a love of learning and was an enlightened ruler. His son Humayun (1508-1556) lacked the energy and vision of his father but was responsible for introducing aspects of Persian art and the Persian language into the Moghul domain. The culture of Pakistan was significantly affected by the Moghuls.

The next Moghul emperor was Akbar (1542-1605). Generally considered the greatest of the Moghuls, Akbar ruled for nearly 50 years. The Moghul Empire was firmly established during this time, and after 1585 Akbar moved his capital from near Agra. In India to Lahore, now in Pakistan, where have built the magnificent Lahore Fort.

Akbar was succeeded by Jahangir (1605-1627), famous for his encouragement of the arts and equally infamous for his cruelty and l addiction to drugs and alcohol. After his death. His son Shah Jhan (1592-1666) became emperor and has been immortalized as the spirit behind the building of the Taj Mahal in India. Shah Jehan actually died in prison, put there by his son Aurangzeb (1618-1707), who was the last Moghul emperor.
