Mansoleums

The mausoleums are mainly made of sandstone exquisitely carved with geometric and floral designs. Most of them date back to the Sammas, the dynasty which ruled Sindh from the mid 14th to the early 16th centuries. Others are from the Mughal period. The carvings are so regular they seem to have been stamped into the stones. Some of the mausoleums are being restored. Recent tombs from the Arghun and Mughal period have beautifully glazed or enameled tiles and bricks, which are still being manufactured, particularly the Thatta blue tile.

Amongst the more important tombs is that of Mirza Jani Beg. Built in 1599 for the last of the Tarkhan rulers. It is made of glazed bricks. The tomb of Mirza Ghazi Beg Tarkhan is located next to the tomb of his father Mirza Jani Beg. Close to his tomb is the tomb of Mirza Tughril Beg, Commander in chief of the Tarkhan army.

North of this is the imposing mausoleum of Nawab Isa Khan, the Mughal Governor of Sindh. Its design is similar to those found in Fatehpur Sikri in India. A low building similarly designed' a little to the east houses the tombs of the women of his zenana: (the part of a house segregated for women). There is a fine view from here across the lake of the town of Thatta.

Jan Baba's tombs

lies near Isa Khan's tomb covered with designs as fragile as the spider s web. The tombs of Mirza Baqi Beg Tarkhan and Ahinsa Bai extend over several enclosures. Their inside walls are carved in the tracery method of roses and sunflowers. Mubarak Khan has a magnificent tomb built on a high base in the form of a square.

The mausoleum of Diwan Shurfa Khan built in 1638 is slightly to the northwest, and is a square solid structure with squat round towers at each corner. A couple of km north, the tomb of Nizam-ud-din is a square stone building constructed out of the materials of a Hindu temple.
