Kot Diji

The Kot Diji site is 24.14 Kms (15 miles south of Khairpur town in the Khairpur District.

For the castle-lovers Kot Diji has a magnificent 18th century Talpur Fort which is in excellent condition, crowning a steep hill on the right of the road.

Discovery of the prehistoric site has pushed back the pre-history of Pakistan by at least another 300 years from about 2,500 BC to 2,800 BC Evidence of a new cultural element of pre-Harappan and pre-Moen-jo-daro dates have been found at Kot Diji. The site consists of two parts: one comprising the citadel area on high ground where the ruling elite lived and an outer area inhabited by the common man. The Kot Diji culture is marked by well-made pottery and houses built of mud-bricks on stone foundations.

There is no proof yet of the place or the origin from where the Kot Dijians arrived in the Indus Valley or how they disappeared.

In the ruins. a thick deposit of charred material has been found over the excavated areas leading scholars to believe, a violent conflagration to be the cause of destruction of this culture probably by the people of Moenjodaro
