Cotton yarn and textile manufacture is Pakistan's most important industry,
followed by light engineering (electrical goods, metal working, precision
equipment), food processing (vegetable oils, sugar, drinks), cement, pharmaceuticals,
leather and rubber. Pakistan has a substantial fertilizer industry, and
Russia helped to build an iron and steel works near Karachi. Industry is
concentrated around Karachi, Hyderabad and Lahore, and employs 13 percent
of the workforce.
