Balochistan
This large province in west and southwest Pakistan occupies an area of over 134,000 square miles. It is separated from the Indus Plain by mountains and is generally a high and rocky area averaging over 1,000 feet
In elevation despite this inhospitable geography, the Balochis manage to survive due to a unique system of irrigation known as the karez ("KAHREZ"). At the foot of the rocky hills, water is collected in underground canals and carried to neighboring fields, where it is drawn off by strategically located well shafts. The underground canals minimize water loss through evaporation due to the dry climate. Farmers manage to grow some crops and supplement this by rearing sheep and goats.
