Jan. 19. Wired support to the AIKC and its objectives on the occasion of the Khilafat Deputation to Viceroy seeking permission to send deputation to England to explain Indian Muslim viewpoint on the Khilafat question; could not join the deputation because of other preoccupation.
Jan. 24. As President of a public meeting of Bombay citizens called upon the people to follow the Indian National Congress and All India Muslim League lead in preparing themselves for working the reforms.
Feb. 15. Attended the Third AIKC in Bombay.
Feb. 18-19. Presided over a function to welcome Lala Lajpat Rai who returned to India after six years of self exile.
Feb. 19. Presided over a function of the Young Khoja Brotherhood and distributed prizes among the winners of sports events.
Feb. 22. Conveyed to Syed Zahur Ahmad, secretary of All India Muslim League, his acceptance of the President of the All India Muslim League for term of three years.
March 14. Presided over a prize distribution ceremony of Kapole Student's Union at Bombay. Considered it "their misfortune" to conduct their proceedings in English; he would be happy "to speak in Urdu or any other national language instead of a foreign one"; but since they had to face the Englishmen. It was indispensable for them to "speak as good English as an Englishman might speak".
April 20. In a letter to Ruttie, Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi wrote, "Please remember me to J and do coax him to learn Hindustani or Gujrati. If I were you, I should begin to talk to him in Gujrati or Hindustani. There is not much danger of your forgetting your English or your misunderstanding each other. Is there? Will you do it? Yes, I would ask this even for the love you bear me."
April 26-27. His offer to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi to become President of AIHRL was accepted after consulting Srinivasa Sastri and others.
June 27.Presided over a largely attended meeting under the joint auspices of the Bombay branches of Home Rule League and the National Union to protest against the Hunter Report and the attitude of His Majesty's Government to the demand for the repeal of Rowlatt Act, the recall of the Viceroy, and punishment to the Punjab offenders.
July 7. Zahur Ahmad forwarded him the Council's Resolution regarding holding of a special session at Calcutta, to consider the Turkish peace treaty, Khilafat and holy places and the Hunter Committee's Report; sought his opinion on the Agenda.
Advised him that in his presidential address he should give Muslim's proper guidance in a manner acceptable to the majority.
July 20. In a letter Zahur Ahmad informed him about the Resolution to be moved in All India Muslim League special session on the "situation arising out of the questions regarding the Peace Treaty and the Khilafat and holy places"; government's action on Hunter Committee's Report, trouble in the Punjab and GOI Act. Requested him for guidance in the above matters for framing a Resolution.
Sept. 4-8.Spoke in the Indian National Congress Subjects Committee against the Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi's non-cooperation program which he considered impractical.
Sept. 5-7. Spoke against non-cooperation program in Congress Sub-Committee deliberations; supported by Sir Dinshaw Petit and others.
Sept. 7. Presided over All India Muslim League special session, Calcutta. Condemned the British government for its hostile policies against the Turks, and the GOI for the repression in Punjab.
Oct. 4. Attended AIHRL meeting at Bombay under chairmanship of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who had replaced Annie Besant as President; Opposed Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi's move to change its constitution, and its name to Swarajya Sabha, but the meeting voted in Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi's favor 109 to 42 votes; his plea that new constitution cannot be approved unless supported by three-fourths of the members. was rejected by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi; walked out of meeting along with Jamnadas Dwarkadas in protest against Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi's "unconstitutional" ruling.
Oct. 25. Resigned from Home Rule League membership, in protest against change in party creed, in a letter to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, who in reply, asked him and his followers to review their decision.
Oct. 31. In reply to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi's letter criticized his methods and techniques saying "your extreme program has for the moment struck the imagination mostly of the inexperienced youth and the ignorant and the illiterate. All this means complete disorganization and chaos. What the consequence of this may be, I shudder to contemplate.... The only way for Nationalists is to unite and work for a program which is universally acceptable for the early attainment of complete responsible Government. Such a program cannot be dictated by any single individual but must have the approval and support of all the prominent Nationalist Leaders in the country and to achieve this end, I am sure my colleagues and myself shall continue to work."
Dec. 19. Addressed students of Ferguson College, Poona and asked them not to take active part in politics.
Dec. 28. In the Indian National Congress session at Nagpur; opposed Resolution changing the aims, objects and creed of Indian National Congress opposed Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi's non-cooperation program; termed it as "dangerous for the country's future", and said that Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi had always caused "split and disorganization" and that his program would "end in disaster". Referred to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, using the prefix "Mr. instead of "Mahatma", and on loud and repeated protests from the audience said "I refuse to be dictated. I have my discretion to call a man by whatever designation I choose provided it is in a Parliament /Parliamentary language."
Later, left the Indian National Congress session in disgust followed
by 20 other participants including Jayakar and Munshi.
