News: DS tops American charts

Monday 17th July, 2006, 11:59 GMT
Independent sales numbers recently released by the NPD group show Nintendo DS to be America's best-selling video games system of any type in June.

The dual screen handheld sold close to 600,000 units, making up for over a third of the total industry system purchases during that month and almost doubling the sales of any other games console, both handheld and home-based.

This success can partly be attributed to the debut of the redesigned DS Lite, a smaller, lighter machine with a brighter and sharper display. It is also thanks to the wealth of unique games available and their own sales figures.

New Super Mario Bros. shifted more than 450,000 units, making it the industry's top-selling game for a second consecutive month, while the continuing success of the Nintendogs titles sold 100,000 units, despite being released 10 months ago.

The Brain Age franchise also boosted sales with its two titles, Brain Age: Train Your Brain In Minutes A Day and Big Brain Academy, selling a combined 350,000 units.

Aside from sales, Nintendo DS has also enjoyed success concerning the users of its wireless gaming network, the Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, which has been accessed by 1.7 million discreet users in eight months, exceeding the adoption rates set by any other game-play network.

"Nintendo DS is the only game system available a year ago that showed growth over the same period, and it did so in overwhelming fashion, with a leap of 426 per cent," said George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications.

"What we're seeing is realisation of our promise that Nintendo will bring gaming to the masses, whatever your taste or level of experience, we've got a system and a game for you."
