News: Settling on the DS

Monday 10th July, 2006, 13:52 GMT
DS looks set to be home to a number of strategy franchises, and now another has joined the dual-screen family. Ubisoft announced recently that it is bringing early-90s sim The Settlers to Nintendo's latest handheld.

Orignally a 1993 PC title, The Settlers is a real-time strategy similar to the Age of Empires series, with a slower pace and a balance between economy, unit management and combat. While the company haven't release many details on how it will utilise Nintendo's hardware, they did explain a few key facts.

Taking the role of either the Romans, Vikings, Asians or Nubians, players can fight for world dominance, either as part of the Roman or World Campaigns, or in "Free Mode", which sees players facing computer-controlled armies. Touch screen control is the order of the day here, with the DS stylus mimicking PC-like mouse control in order to keep unit management simple.

Scheduled for a Q4 2006 release in Europe and Asia, The Settlers hasn't been given an American release date yet.
