| Born in 1973, Mark Anthony
Myrie, the last of 15 children, Buju Banton traces his roots back to the Maroons, African
slaves brought to Jamaica in the 1600's. The Maroons were known to rebel against slavery.
Brought up in the ghetto of Barbican where he received the name Buju from his mother,
which was a Maroon word for "breadfruit". This name came due to the fact that
Buju was a chubby as a child and round like a breadfruit. At 15 he recorded tracks for Clifton Dillon's Shang label. One of the songs
recorded at this time was the original of the hit "Boom Bye Bye". Now 16
years of age he meets Dave Kelly Penthouse label and records "Man fi Dead"
and "Jackie and Joyce" in 1989.
