Jamaica's Transportation sector is well developed and
guarantees speedy movement of persons and goods within and outside of the country. We
have:
- One of the densest road networks of any country in the
world.
- Aerodromes at strategic points across the island that form
an essential part of our domestic infrastructure.
- Two international airports, the Donald Sangster (Montego
Bay) and the Norman Manley (Kingston)
Passenger movement stood at 4.04 million in 1997.
The country's strategic geographical location at the
center of vital sea routes to North America, Europe and the Far East, as well as the
attributes of the Kingston Harbour, have contributed to the viability of Kingston as a
major trans-shipment terminal. The port is one of the most modern and efficient in the
Region.
In 1996-1997, more than 7,000 shipping calls were made to
Jamaican ports. The country's ports have the capacity to handle all categories of vessels
including dry/bulk cargoes, liquid bulk and cruise shipping.
In anticipation of increased traffic at our ports, more
than $1 billion has been allocated for further development and modernization.
For more information, the Port Authority is now online. Their website
provides more detailed information and statistics on Jamaica's ports and sea
infrastructures.
