3rd Light World Castle:
Desert Palace
Preparations
Before you get in this castle, you must get the Book of Mudora, which allows you to read the ancient language of the Hylians. There is a library in the southwest part of Kakariko Village (it is just northeast of the maze place; it has a book above the door). Inside, you'll find a green book sitting on top of a shelf; dash into the bookcase to dislodge the book.

Getting in the Castle
Push X to look at your map; you'll see a desert in the southwest. It is called the Desert of Mystery. Walk there via the swamp south of your house. In the northwest part of the desert, you'll find a platform; use the Book of Mudora to read a sign, then enter the castle.

Getting the Big Key and the Power Glove
North of you you'll find a green statue with a rotating eye. If it sees you, it will shoot a laser at you. The only way to avoid it is to stand behind something taller than you or to move suddenly as it shoots the laser. Other baddies you'll see frequenting this place are sand lion-types who suck you down into their pits (red also shoot fire at you, blue do not) and blob things that pop out of the sand. Both are relatively easy to kill with your sword. Just make sure they don't appear out from under you and don't get too close to the sand lions. Enter the western-most door on the northern wall and dash into the lamp to get a small key. Go east one door, stand on the switch between the cyclopes and grab the Map. Now go through the locked door on the eastern wall. Get the compass, then kill the amoebas to open the door. Dodge the bullets to get the Big Key. Now go to the far west side of the castle; enter the northern-most door on the western wall. Push the switch under the pot at 10:30. Get the Power Glove in the room north of you. This allows you to lift light gray stones and push some heavy blocks.

To the Boss
Go back to the main room and go in the southwestern door. You can access the faeries in here by pushing the third block from the left down. Outside, grab Piece of Heart #8. Go through the door on the ledge north of the main entrance. In this room, dash into the north side of the eastern white statue to push the block just north of it by your ricochet (you'll never believe how long it took me to figure that one out). In the next room, stand in the doorway and wait for the tiles to finish, because they will just break on the doorway if you stay where you are. There is a key in the southwestern pot. Pass through the empty room, the kill all the amoebas to proceed. In the next room, pick up the key in the third pot from the left (it's tricky to dodge the lasers; just keep moving). Now wait for the tiles to break again, grab the key in the northeast pot, then go through the door. Light the four torches, THEN open all the pots to stock up because you're about to face . . .

The Boss of Desert Palace: Lanmolas
Here's the gist of it: there are three giant worms who pop out of the ground and dive back in. Kinda like Dune or something, only you can't ride them. It seems they are not really aware of the fact that you're even there -- I mean, they don't jump at you or visibly attempt to come out of the ground where you're standing. Here's what you need to be aware of: it will hurt you if they happen to run into you or pop out under you (duh); when they come up, they spray you with dirt clods that pack some damage; you can see where they will come out of the ground because the dirt will bunch up at that place. Basically, just hit their heads with your sword several times to make each one die. I'm not really sure how many hits it takes, since I can never keep track of how many times I've attacked each one (they are identical). Once two are down, the last one will fling out dirt clods in 8 directions instead of 4, so be careful. Kill him to be rewarded with the second Pendant!
