JADAVPUR CENTRAL ROAD

PARIVESH SAMITI

Registration No. S/1L/42619 of 2006 - 2007
(Erstwhile Parivesh Suraksha Committee - established 24th Feb 2002)

"We should spare no effort at developing congested, filthy slums into habitable greeneries. At the same time we need not simply stand by and watch as neighborhoods, which were once green and beautiful, are reduced to pockets of grey, polluted hell. Land sharks must be stopped from gobbling up the few remaining water bodies, endangering the future of our beloved city. Construction activity must proceed hand in hand with improvements in civic conditions. It shouldn't lead to the rise of goons who terrorize entire communities, openly flout municipal laws and set up chains of illegal shops in residential areas. Lorries and buses must also be prevented from parking in such localities and poisoning our children's lungs." - As conveyed to us by residents of Jadavpur Central Road.

This is an introductory booklet. It is about who we are, our past, and our future dreams.

"WE HAD TO UNITE, OR PERISH. WE DIDN'T HAVE A CHOICE!"

A snapshot of our past: Residents had had enough, and stepped out of their homes to protest against rising lawlessness and dangerous levels of pollution in the region. Doctors, teachers, house wives, students; everyone raised a common voice against attempts to terrorize the residents and fill up the pond. (Picture taken on 24th Feb 2002 on Jadavpur Central Road, near the pond)

WHO ARE WE?

The Jadavpur Central Road Parivesh Samiti, previously known as Parivesh Suraksha Committee was formed on 24th Feb 2002. It represents the urgent civic, health, and security needs of people living near the pond on Central Road (satellite picture of area on page 5). The area is located in the border zone between Municipal Wards 93 and 96 (the pond falls under ward 93), and under the Dhakuria Assembly Constituency. There was a time when we had felt acutely neglected and as if left to fend for ourselves. Hence we had to unite. The Samiti has always worked by raising environmental awareness among residents, by promoting interaction through cultural events, and in close harmony with the local administration and elected officials.

The second booklet from Parivesh Suraksha Committee, which is now Jadavpur Central Road Parivesh Samiti following registration on 19th Feb 2007. Among other things (a brief history of the movement, ill effects of diesel and noise pollution, the need to unitedly confront widespread hooliganism) this booklet includes proposed work plan for renovation of the pond. Published in Mar 2007, this has been preceded hopefully by a Bengali version.
