  • What is a CD-RW?

CD-R or CD-RW stands for Compact Disc Recorder or Re-Writer. They are used to copy CD's and to save information from your computer to CD's. It looks just like a regular CD-ROM and can cost several hundred dollars, depending on the kind you buy. There are two basic options, Internal or External. If you buy an Internal CD-RW, they are cheaper but they require that you have room inside your computer to install it and you have to install it yourself (contact your manufacturer or e-mail Jack for help). An External CD-RW is a little more expensive, but easier to install. It plugs into a USB port, so you must have one of those available. Each kind comes with software that you must install in order to use this machine. You will also need to purchase blank CD's. There are two types, CD-R which means you can only save things to them once and CD-RW which means you can save over or add to the things you have saved on it. CD-R CD's are cheaper and what I suggest for beginners. There are more resources on the web as well as several creative suggestions for what to do with any CD's that you copy incorrectly and ruin (great to use as coasters but you can make several of them into windchimes).

  • Why do I keep getting disconnected from the Internet?

The two major reasons are phone lines or your provider. This doesn't happen with cable or DSL lines as often, and if you have a dedicated connection, call your provider. Otherwise, it means that either your ISP has a time-out so they only let you stay on for so many hours before cutting you off OR the phone lines in your area are too weak to keep the signal going. To be sure it's not your computer, while you are on the Internet, click on Tools and then Options. Click the Connection Tab and look through the settings for a place that says "Disconnect if Idle for xyz minutes". Check the box next to it and set it for 59 minutes. If this doesn't help, contact your ISP or e-mail Jack.
  • How do I add a Website to my list of Favorites?

Just follow these simple instructions:
Go online and go to the website that you want to save. Then click Favorites at the top of your screen. Click Add To Favorites. You can name it whatever you want (like Jack The Pug) and save it so you can view it without going on the Internet by clicking Make Available in Off-line Mode. Then Click OK.

  • How do I send pictures with an e-mail?

First you need to save the picture somewhere on your computer. Then write down where you saved it. Next, go online and open your e-mail program. Click on Compose or New Message. Then click on Insert. It will ask you where you saved the picture. Click or type in the file name and then click OK. You can still type a message in the e-mail, like "Picture of Jack cleaning the keyboard". Then click Send.

  • Do I really need Virus Protection?

If you don't mind losing important files on your computer or can afford to call Tech Support on a weekly basis, then by all means, leave your computer unprotected. Even your best friends can send you a virus, without even realizing it. And chances are, if you have an older computer, then somewhere down the dog path, you're going to have to download some upgrades from the Internet. Without Virus Protection, you're leaving your computer wide open to attacks. You may even contract a virus from a Floppy Disk you borrow from someone. The best defense is common sense, and a good virus program. Before you decide on what to buy, ask your friends, the neighborhood geeks, and check out the TechTV (formerly ZDTV) virus info at their website. The two main virus protection companies are McAfee and Norton, but there are others out there.
