February: L'arc~en~Ciel founded by tetsu, consisting of four members: hyde as lead singer, tetsu on bass, hiro on guitar and pero on drums

June: hiro leaves the band and ken comes on as the new guitarist

April: sakura is arrested for possession of drugs and the band pulls back from the public eyes
