Several ideas were brought forth on how to best shift tactics to face new threats from both the Inner Sphere and Clans. Several ideas were approved, such as elemental carriers and new 'Mechs. But one superior design fell into the hands of Ghost Bear by chance. Nova Cat designers had approved a design named the Firesprite. A forty-ton design designed primarily for fire support. Armed with an array of missiles, it was sculpted to replenish provisional garrison clusters that has lost fire support units in recent bouts. An uninspired design, it was somehow approved and a prototype was sent for mass production. Due to a clerical slip, the JumpShip transporting the prototype jumped into a Ghost Bear system. Due to the recent hostilities between Ghost Bear and the Draconis Combine, a few worlds had shifted ownership. The transport ship was immediately set upon by in-system Ghost Bear space units and was captured. While the transport was eventually given back, Ghost Bear officially denied ever finding a prototype mech. Seeing a real opportunity to save time and resources, Khan Bjorn approved speeding the 'Mech through trials, but attempting to upgrade it to a more useful role. Putting a new crew of untried technicians, the young techs vowed to create a truly impressive mech. The new design is their answer to an un-inspired machine created by the Nova Cats. The original design faced high heat problems, and low ammunition. Noting that the Firesprite had excellent speed and fare armor, the design team decided not to mingle with it too much. The weapons load was completely pulled. Also the engine was downgraded to a 280 XL to make more room for jump jets and more weapons. Due to surprising stockpile of extra 280 Engines from a surplus, the plan was immediately approved. The weapons payload is a good mix of short-range weapons. One Extended Range PPC in the Left Torso provides the punch of the assault. While a Streak SRM-4 provides a back up assault to the large laser. One medium pulse laser rounded out the weapons payload. Also jump jets were added to give the 'Mech ample maneuverability. As an afterthought, an ER Small Laser was added into the head for an all out assault weapon in case the machine was highly damaged. The PPC had problems in its torso housing though, the cable connecting the weapon to the power source kept melting, and the design team could not find out why. Deciding a cooler running weapon might due the trick, the design was changed slightly, and a large pulse laser was added instead. So far, no one reported any problems with the new lasers. As an after thought, with the extra room, all the lasers were tied into an advanced targeting computer, giving the 'Mech deadly accuracy. The 'Mech has impressive speed, even for a forty-ton mech. The Syndicate can reach speeds of a hundred and thirteen kmp, and can jump an impressive distance. The 'Mech is highly mobile and heavily armed, a design in the frame of the Pack Hunter. The design team handed in the final design well pleased with them selves. After speedy field- testing, the design was approved and sent into mass production. Late 3066 the first run of the newly christened Syndicate made its way into the Ghost Bear touman. So far no problems have been reported with the new machine. It has yet to face serious combat, but of the few skirmishes it has been in, the Syndicate has proved its worth as a hard-hitting raider and skirmisher. Deployment So far the Syndicate has been deployed in only a few Cluster. The two Keshik Clusters have received two full stars of these 'Mechs apiece. Also due to the ease of use, several training clusters have been given several of these 'Mechs. It is interesting to note, that many newer pilots have asked to be assigned to these new machines. Untested pilots with little skill training appreciate the use of the pulse technology coupled with the targeting computer. Clusters all across the touman are asking for the new design, and production facilities on Ashlain have been expanded to meet the new demand. Also several other clans have taken notice of the new design. Aside from Nova Cat complaints that the Syndicate is their stolen prototype, no trials of possession have been made so far. It is interesting to note the trend toward lighter 'Mechs with fast mobile heavy weapons. This trend toward Pack Hunting shows a shift in tactics across the board as both Inner Sphere and Clan production teams are turning out similar designs. Designs such as the Wolves in Exile Pack Hunter and Snow Fox show a trend toward fast mobile combat. This trend should be considered when new designs are issued to Comstar Command.
