Here is a little information, on the characters that play a large part in the fortunes of the Gundam pilots:
Relena Darlin/Peacecraft
Relena was the first person to discover the identity of Heero Yuy, as he fell to Earth. Heero thus needed to kill her, as she knew too much. He finds himself unable to so, due to Relena's eagerness to sacrifice her own life for him. Relena later discovers that she is the heiress to the Sank Kingdom, in Nothern Europe. Hence her real surname, Peacecraft. She eventually helps Heero to reclaim his lost humanity.
Zechs Marquise/Milliardo Peacecraft
Lt. (and later Colonel) Zechs Marquise is Oz's finest soldier. He is an ace mobile suit pilot, and is the only person apart from the Gundam pilots, able to handle the prototype Leo suit - the Tallgeese. He wears a mask to conceal his true identity however, for his real name is Milliardo Peacecraft. He is the true heir to the Sank Kingdom, but he relinquished his claim to the throne, in favour of his sister Relena, due to the fact that he had killed so many people, when his father was so dedicated to pacifism. Milliardo becomes obsessed with fighting Heero, who he sees as his only worthy adversary, and eventually pilots his own Gundam - Epyon.
Treize Khushrenada
Leader of Oz, Colonel Treize is a war romantic. He sees battle as beautiful, and fundamental to human existance. He is an excellent swordsman, and believes very much in duelling, as opposed to battling. When he built Gundam Epyon, he eliminated all long range weapons, in favour of powerful close range ones. He is a staunch opponent of using automated weaponary, believing that humans are an essential part of battle.
Lady Une
Lady Une has split personalities. On one hand, she is the most brutal and heartless of all soldiers. On the other hand, she is warm, kind, and belives in total pacifism. This split came about by her conflicting ideas of how to carry out the ideals of Treize.
The Gundam engineers
The 5 engineers who originally built the prototype mobile suit, the Tallgeese, were horrified by what the Earth Sphere Alliance were doing with this technology. They later made a blueprint for a new type of mobile suit, called a Gundam. This Gundam (Wing Zero), was never built, as it was too dangerous. Instead, they each made one less powerful Gundam, and found pilots for them. Thus, Operation Meteor was born.
