| Workers at the Tarrant-Ajalpan factory in Puebla, Mexico formed the union SUITTAR (Sidnicato Unico Independiente de Trabajadores de la empresa Tarrant Mexico) in order to address unfair working conditions. Workers make between $40 and $70 a week and are forced to meet unreasonable quotas. If they do not make these quotas they face salary reductions or overtime without compensation. In July of 2003 the leaders of the union movement werre illegally fired. Throughout the month of August over 700 more workers were illegally fired in connection with union activities. For more information, see the Worker Rights Consortium's interim report. United Students Against Sweatshops and other labor rights and anti-sweatshop groups is calling for the immediate re-instatement with backwages for all fired workers and a committment to recognizing the workers' right to unionize. Indiana-USAS sent 39 letters toTommy Hilfiger Corporation, one of the many American companies that buys jeans from the Tarrant Apparel Group. |

| One of the main goals of Indiana-USAS is to ensure that the IUP campus is not involved in sweatshop labor. To that end we are working with the IUP Co-op Store to do checks on the companies that make clothing and other items sold in the store. We have had one preliminary meeting with the Co-op Store. The manager was very enthusiastic and has given us permission to go through the store's files on the various companies. The IUP Co-op store does have its own anti-sweatshop policy and is comitted to discontinuing business with companies that do not meet that standard. | ||||||||||||
