These are the playlists for the shows that I've done on CKCU. I try and update this page as the show airs, letting you know what's currently playing, but it's best to give me a day to get it up here with artist links and everything. If you'd like to listen to me, my show broadcasts Monday mornings, 10:00 'til 11:30 AM Eastern, and can be heard in the National Capital Region and surrounding areas by tuning into 93.1 FM, and it is also available worldwide via the Internet and streaming Real Audio by going to CKCU's audio page.

If you'd like to purchase anything you've heard on the show, I've created a page with links to stores, both local and online, that may be able to help you out.

* Funkadelic was a request, Tina Turner turned 66(!) on Saturday.

* An open letter to Peter Simpson, arts editor for the Ottawa Citizen: What do you possibly have to gain from running a CD review bashing a Regis Philbin Christmas album? I highly doubt anybody predetermined to buy it will be swayed one way or the other by a scathing one-star review. But I'm not here to defend Regis, I'm here to ask, if the Citizen is only going to review 10-12 albums every week (with most of the pop/rock ones being imported from a Montreal newspaper), why waste one of the limited spaces on something bad/that's not going to get a fair criticism anyway/inputted as a lark? This is made even more galling by the fact that the last bit of space in the music review section asks local bands to send stuff for review. If I were an indie band, not just restricted to Ottawa, or to Canada, but in all of North America, why would I send a CD to a newspaper that would intentionally run a review for something awful instead of using that space to support a band that needs coverage, could use the feedback for help with touring, distribution, etc. If I were a local band, would I find myself wondering, "You know, that could've been our album reviewed in that space had they not thrown it away"? If I were a local independent retailer, would I be wondering why you were driving people away from coming into my store at Christmas time instead of giving them a reason to come in? Doing a radio show at a station where we recieve untold amounts of music, local, national and international, it's hard to believe you couldn't find anything truly worthy to review, and get people excited at music being created today.

Rick Moranis "Five Star Motels" The Agoraphobic Cowboy

* Guitar legend Link Wray passed away around two weeks ago at the age of 76.

* Well, the U2 concert that tickets went on sale for 8 months ago finally happens this week. It's funny how the Stones, Springsteen and Aerosmith can announce a show only six weeks in advance of playing. But I guess in U2's case all of the interest collected on the money from 18,000 tickets sold and sitting in the bank for nearly 3/4 of a year, plus all of the radio royalties for the increased amount of radio airplay they've recieved since the show was announced, not an inconsiderable amount when you take into consideration CHEZ, the Bear, BOB, and KISS playing them excessively in honour of the announcement, all of this extra money will go to Africa so Bono shows he's a man of action and not just words, right? Right?

Faith and begora! I'm a looker!

Black Keys in town Friday as part of CKCU's 30th anniversary celebrations (station was born Nov 14, 1975 at midnight); another, smaller concert birthday celebration featuring Rhume, the John Henrys and the Empiricals takes place Saturday, as well as an open house at the station.

* If you and some chums like to get together on Saturday nights and try and recreate ItBS! episodes for your own amusement (almost as much fun as Pictionary), perhaps you'd like to know that I was going to play "Mr. Love Song" by the Bush Tetras, from Beauty Lies, between C.C and Betty Davis for a smoother transition between the tracks. It got yanked for time considerations.

* Respect due to Brian Murphy, who passed away last week. He hosted the radio shows The Source, Blues 106 and Jazz 106 back when CHEZ was a good radio station. I probably listened to more blues than most young Canadian boys did because of him (didn't tend to listen to the jazz show, however, as it was on a little late for me), and his annual Christmas Source shows were just as much a part of the countdown to Xmas Day as watching A Charlie Brown Christmas was for me. And I always really liked the way he'd say the year when starting his show. Ex: "Nineteen-hundred and eighty-six."

The first time I was ever on the radio was for a quick one-hour DJ/tape the performance for evaluation for the program director shot during the Friday Overnighter, around 3 in the morning in March 1996. A man called up and wanted to hear "Sail Away" by Randy Newman. I played it, and after it was over, the man called back to thank me and get a little info on the station. He said he was friends with Brian Murphy, and was trying to convince him to get back on the radio. I said I thought that would be great, as Brian Murphy was an amazing DJ. As far as I know, however, that was about as far as that idea went.

* Neil Young turns 60 this week, hence all the songs.

Episode 86: "If you're at a club and a girl with a big ass is throwing it on you, the DJ could play the Smurfs theme song and that would be the club banger, like, 'Yo, he dropped that Gargamel! It's off the chain!' Anything [sounds good] to a bunch of half-drunk [people] in a room with lights off."

Nouvelle Vague "In A Manner of Speaking" Nouvelle Vague

* This week marks one year in this timeslot, two years since I returned to CKCU's airwaves (blame Ryan for that).

* I'll admit it: a large chunk of this show was chosen on the basis of wanting to hear more songs by bands on an Endearing sampler I have. Nouvelle Vague in Montreal and Toronto this week, Lou Barlow in town first week of October. The Kate Bush album came out 20 years ago this week.

* I forgot to mention this on the air, but in the liner notes to Wiley's album he's pictured wearing an Ottawa Lynx hat! How did that happen?

* Hey, who wants to do their radio buddy Bryan a favour? E-mail Much More Retro at [email protected] and tell them "No more commercials, please!" This digital cable channel was a ray of sunshine in my cloudy life, with its 24-hour a day broadcasting of videos from the 1970s-1990s, but they recently started airing commercials, and airing them frequently, I might add. The channel made my favourite music of 2004 list, and I'd say is the fourth-most important influence on the programming of this show (its reminded/introduced me to a lot of forgotten 1980s Canadian bands), and everything good about the channel went out the window with the introduction of commercials 2 weeks ago. This is a subscription-based channel, with no on-air personalities, and no programming aquisitions to make (the videos were given to them decades ago), so how much overhead can they possibly have? Thank you for reading.
