in English: Part 1
The
following is an example of what can be done
with IT as a visual aid to teaching
English.
Rationale:
There are many different forms of text which
students must be taught to critically
examine. These include visual texts such as
artwork, advertising, photographs, film,
television shows and commercials, news and
current affairs, documentaries and many other
visual texts. Like written works, visual
texts have a narrative and tell a story. One
of the really good ways of teaching students
about the narrative of visual texts is to
present them with visual images and invite
them to write a story based on the image(s).
Context:
This is a suitable exercise for all years
from year 6 through to year 12. The only
variable will be the complexities of the text
itself.
Activity:
Students will choose an image (or a group of
images). Each image is given a title only,
but the students will be asked to write on a
specific theme [Note: Depending on the
abilities of the students, teachers may ask
them to choose their own theme]. Students
may either write two short pieces of poetry
based on their initial reaction to the image
in the context of the theme, or they may
write a short story as a response.
The
Texts: Here are the texts.
