Teachers who embrace the new technologies learn very quickly that there are problems (See table 2 IT: For and Against). But smart teaching methods, together with good classroom management procedures, can overcome some of the more difficult problems associated with the use of IT Technologies in the classroom.

I have put together some web sites which illustrate the kinds of things which can be done as a project. These projects can be taken on by individuals, small groups or whole classes. Each project incorporates at least some of the mediums usually associated with IT or Web Technologies. These examples can serve as inspiration for students to follow. Please visit the Projects section of this site to see the three web sites in focus.

Internet Use

1) Huge database of information on any given subject.

2) Fast, easy access to information and media.

3) All types of media available as one package.

4) Multiple voices.

5) Interactivity.

6) Global Scale.

7) Entertaining and exciting mediums to explore.

1) Many sites present extreme views and/or material not suitable to minors (or even Adults for that matter).

2) Young people are vulnerable to opinion, even where those opinions may not be valid.

3) Difficult to verify sources.

4) Can be a time consuming exercise to do research online.

5) Many colourful and entertaining distractions to take students off task.

Web Design

1) Great for publishing and showing off work to the world.

2) Experimenting with a form of publishing not disimilar to traditional publishing.

3) Fun way to encourage students to put their work up for consideration and critical examination.

4) Gives students a chance to publish using all forms of media (text, sound, video and other visuals).

1) Copyright is a huge problem, as is plagerism.

2) Students sometimes tend to focuss on the graphics, without learning skills in effective writing, aesthetics, layout and user-friendly design.

3) Students are invariably at differnet levels of skill, anywhere from no experience at all, to extremely competent.
