| The birth year for Clinton C is hard to make out in this picture, but it is 1889, which just happens to be the same year of the Great Johnstown flood, which was caused by the collapse of the damn, due to faulty regulator gates designed to controll the amount of water released from the damn in order to prevent the damn from overflowing. Because these water release gates were not properly maintained, the excessive rain water could not be released quickly enough to prevent the lake held within the damn from cresting the damn, which in turn began the rapid erosion of the earthen and stone damn, thereby bringing about its distruction, and the distruction of the city of Johnstown, Pa. down river. The water crashed its way down the hill, picking up speed and deadly objects and carrying everything in its path with it down the hill, until everything slammed into the face of the far hill where the Inclined Plane stands today, and rushed back, having no where else to go, over the entire city of Johnstown, killing hundreds. The Johnstown Historical Musiem, which can be seen in the valley from atop the Inclined Plain Observation Platform, has a regular showing of a documentary which features actual footage of the flood. I have been to this Musiem and have seen the documentary. I also understand that it has been shown on various PBS television stations across the country. If you have never seen this short film, let me urge you to check it out if you are ever in the Johnstown area. It is well worth it to see it for yourself. (If anyone knows why they put 'Clinton C' rather than 'Charles C', please let me know. They did the same for 'Ella C', who is actually Catherin Ellen (Kern). Aunt Barbara has confirmed that 'Clinton C' is actually Charles Clinton, but was called 'CC' by those who knew him.) |
