What is a good age to start Suzuki Recorder Lessons?

Any time between 3 and 103 years of age. Well, in reality it depends on the student, the environment and the support.

I have started one student at two and a half years, others at three, most at five, and I have worked with many adults. A very young child will benefit from the exposure to great music, the joy of being able to participate in the music making and the playful and encouraging atmosphere of the Suzuki method. It will require alot of patience from the parent and the teacher when working with very young students. The progress is often not clearly visible and the challenge is to keep making music fun.

A student starting at about 8 years will show great progress in the ability to aquire the repertoire on the soprano recorder. At about10 years the students are usually able to add the alto recorder to their instrumentarium. Not much later he/she will try tenor and bass recorders.

Many adults start playing recorders later in life. This instument is acessible, and provides much joy when played alone or in groups. It will give a great outlet for our artistic abilities so often neglected during the busy career oriented years of our lives.
