Thanks for all your work. I am of Irish descent as far back as I can trace in the USA. I am trying to solve a linguistic problem currently. All members of the same family(that of my maternal grandmother) are either CRAY/CREAGH or MCGRATH in Ireland (Rathdowney and Durrow in Co. Laois (Queens) and Ballyragget in Kilkenny) Most of them emigrated to Penn Yan, NY USA as McGrath, but found earlier (1850 +) family members who were CRAUGH in Penn Yan. The newcomer MCGRATHS became CRAUGH too in the 1880's. For instance, my grandmother was born in Ballyragget as Catherine McGrath, daughter of Martin McGrath. She appears on my mother's birth certificate as Kathleen (Kitty) Craugh. No one presently alive in our family seems to have an answer, except possibly the dropping of the MC name because of anti -Catholic prejudice in the 19th century in upstate NY. Yet the CRAY/CREAGH name appears in the records of the RC church in Rathdowney. Martin seems to have become MCGrath when he moved to Ballyragget. Does anybody out there have any ideas for me?
